    Job matching, family gap and fertility choice

    This paper concentrates on the role of job matching frictions in influencing the interactions between fertility choice and wage offers and show that job market frictions are a crucial factor in wage differentials among female workers. The goals of this paper are to examine how the home-stay alternative and asymmetric market frictions influence this wage differential and whether the well documented negative correlation between fertility choice and female earnings still holds in the face of life-cycle choices. To address these questions, we develop a search-theoretic model that incorporates fertility and job decisions and assume that the workers with children face a lower job matching rate and a higher job quitting rate relative to the rates faced by the workers without children. As a result, we find that a wider wage differential is associated with more asymmetric market frictions and that the wage differential has a positive effect from output differential, a positive scale effect from the output of mothers and a negative effect from the utility from staying home. The wage differential is positively correlated with both fertility and home-stay rates and negatively correlated with market thickness and matching technology. Furthermore, by having both fertility and home-stay choices endogenously determined, we can show that a tighter market will enhance the fertility rate and the home-stay rate and a better job matching technology would not only increase the home-stay rate but decrease the fertility rate. In general equilibrium, the effects of both market tightness and the matching technology on the wage differential are indeterminate. These results indicate that the home-stay choice actually gives workers with children not only an alternative but also the power to negotiate higher wages. This shrinks the wage differential. Finally, the result that a higher fertility rate enlarges the wage differential also implies a negative relationship between the fertility rate and the earnings of workers with children. This result is consistent with standard empirical findings

    Two variants on T2DM susceptible gene HHEX are associated with CRC risk in a Chinese population

    Increasing amounts of evidence has demonstrated that T2DM (Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus) patients have increased susceptibility to CRC (colorectal cancer). As HHEX is a recognized susceptibility gene in T2DM, this work was focused on two SNPs in HHEX, rs1111875 and rs7923837, to study their association with CRC. T2DM patients without CRC (T2DM-only, n=300), T2DM with CRC (T2DM/CRC, n=135), cancer-free controls (Control, n=570), and CRC without T2DM (CRC-only, n=642) cases were enrolled. DNA samples were extracted from the peripheral blood leukocytes of the patients and sequenced by direct sequencing. The χ(2) test was used to compare categorical data. We found that in T2DM patients, rs1111875 but not the rs7923837 in HHEX gene was associated with the occurrence of CRC (p= 0.006). for rs1111875, TC/CC patients had an increased risk of CRC (p=0.019, OR=1.592, 95%CI=1.046-2.423). Moreover, our results also indicated that the two variants of HEEX gene could be risk factors for CRC in general population, independent on T2DM (p< 0.001 for rs1111875, p=0.001 for rs7923837). For rs1111875, increased risk of CRC was observed in TC or TC/CC than CC individuals (p<0.001, OR= 1.780, 95%CI= 1.385-2.287; p<0.001, OR= 1.695, 95%CI= 1.335-2.152). For rs7923837, increased CRC risk was observed in AG, GG, and AG/GG than AA individuals (p< 0.001, OR= 1.520, 95%CI= 1.200-1.924; p=0.036, OR= 1.739, 95%CI= 0.989-3.058; p< 0.001, OR= 1.540, 95%CI= 1.225-1.936). This finding highlights the potentially functional alteration with HHEX rs1111875 and rs7923837 polymorphisms may increase CRC susceptibility. Risk effects and the functional impact of these polymorphisms need further validation

    Nondeterminstic ultrafast ground state cooling of a mechanical resonator

    We present an ultrafast feasible scheme for ground state cooling of a mechanical resonator via repeated random time-interval measurements on an auxiliary flux qubit. We find that the ground state cooling can be achieved with \emph{several} such measurements. The cooling efficiency hardly depends on the time-intervals between any two consecutive measurements.     Analysis on tacrolimus efficacy in the treatment of vernal keratoconjunctivitis

    AIM: To evaluate the curative effects of tacrolimus on vernal keratoconjunctivitis(VKC). <p>METHODS: A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.Sixteen ambulatory patients from department of ophthalmology in West China Hospital of Sichuan University were randomly divided into drug treatment group and control group. Patients in treatment group were treated with tacrolimus eye drops, and control group with the basic placebo eye drops. Observation period of the trial was 28 days after taking the drops. The signs and symptoms were recorded and marked respectively. Total variation of ocular signs before or after therapy was main therapeutic index but subjective symptoms were the secondary index. <p>RESULTS: Comparison in groups: there were significant differences on the scores of signs and symptoms before and after medication. After the drug treatment group, consciousness of each period symptom score was lower than before the medication, and over time, symptom score gradually reduced, the difference was statistically significant, but the control group after the medication had no statistically significant differences between different periods. Compared between the groups: There were no significant differences of subjective symptoms and signs before and after medication at the first review, but there were statistically significant differences during the other two reviews. Score variation(scores before or after medication)had no significant differences in the first review but had it in the following two times.<p>CONCLUSION:Tacrolimus can be used to improve the signs and symptoms of VKC, especially for the severe patients who are nonresponse to the anti-anaphylaxis drops. Tacrolimus can be quick and excellent to improve the effects, so it can be applied into clinic

    A generic theory for Majorana zero modes in 2D superconductors

    It is well known that non-Abelian Majorana zero modes (MZM) harbor at vortex cores in a px+ipyp_{x}+\text{i}p_{y} topological superconductor, which can be realized in a 2D spin-orbit coupled system with a single Fermi surface and by proximity coupling to an ss-wave superconductor. Here we show that existence of non-Abelian MZMs is unrelated to the bulk topology of a 2D superconductor, and propose that such exotic modes can be resulted in much broader range of superconductors, being topological or trivial. For a generic 2D system with multiple Fermi surfaces and gapped out by superconducting pairings, we show that at least a single MZM survives if there are only odd number of Fermi surfaces of which the corresponding superconducting orders have vortices, and such MZM is protected by an emergent Chern-Simons invariant, irrespective of the bulk topology of the superconductor. This result may enrich new experimental schemes for realizing non-Aelian MZMs. In particular, we propose a minimal scheme to realize the MZMs in a 2D superconducting Dirac semimetal with trivial bulk topology, which can be well achieved based on the recent cold atom experiments.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, plus Supplementary Materia
